Have you considered asking others with the journals if they know how to combat this? I haven't seen it happen myself, but this can't have been the only time this has happened.
I've never visited a clinic here, but that sounds like the right place to research strange conditions of this world. And considering it's changing your body, it would count as a medical issue.
